Health fears over CO2 storage are unfounded, study shows

Capturing CO2 from power stations and storing it deep underground carries no significant threat to human health, despite recently voiced fears that it might, a study has shown. Researchers found that the risk of death from poisoning as a result of exposure to CO2 leaks from underground rocks is about one in 100 million – far less than the chances of winning the lottery jackpot.

Carbon capture: How to trap a gas (New Scientist Pull-out / 3 of 4)

Carbon dioxide forms around 10 per cent of a typical coal power station's exhaust gas, so before burial it must be separated from other gases. Burying all the exhaust would be infeasible, not least due to the huge volumes involved. However, separating CO2 is currently the most expensive part of carbon capture and storage (CCS), so extensive research is under way to increase efficiency.

Progressing Scotland's CO2 storage opportunities

Scotland can realise the employment, economic and environmental benefits of carbon storage. A consortium of Scottish Government, industry and researchers has shown that rocks deep beneath the Moray Firth are capable of storing decades of CO2 output from Scotland’s power stations. This emerging Carbon Capture and Storage {CCS} industry could create at least 13,000 new Scottish jobs by 2020. These are key findings of the report, 'Progressing Scotland's CO2 storage opportunities', which was unveiled today.

European Commission launches major investment programme for innovative low-carbon technologies

The European Commission launched on 9 November 2010 the first call for proposals for the world’s largest programme of investment in low carbon and renewable energy demonstration projects. The initiative, known as "NER300", will provide substantial financial support for at least eight projects involving carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies and at least 34 projects involving innovative renewable energy technologies.

The aim is to drive low carbon economic development in Europe, creating new 'green' jobs and contributing to the achievement of the EU's ambitious climate change goals. The European Investment Bank (EIB) is collaborating with the Commission in the implementation of the programme. Companies interested in making proposals have 3 months to submit bids at national level

Sequestering Carbon Dioxide Underground: Why the Economides Model is a Bumblebee of an Analysis

The possibility of carbon dioxide storage underground, for carbon capture and storage, does of course require reliability. The Economides article referred to by Terry Macalister (in the Guardian) proposes the idea that CO2 cannot be injected below ground, because of the resulting pressure increase. This article is notorious for taking an extreme view, which most experts consider to be profoundly incorrect.

18-Mar-2010 - Models of Geological Capacity and Injectivity for Carbon Sequestration: Is the Pressure Off?

Dr Andrew Cavanagh (Permedia Research) will be giving a seminar at the Grant Institute (13:00, Thu 18 Mar, 2010; Hutton Lecture Theatre) - Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is forecasted to grow to a gigatonne waste management industry within two decades. However, our current experience of CO2 injection for storage is limited to a fraction of a gigatonne. Estimates of capacity and formation pressure response (aka injectivity) to industrial-scale storage have relied on analytical models and numerical simulations. However, observations from the three largest storage sites in the world (Sleipner, In Salah and Weyburn) tell a different story... (All Welcome)

How Green Can Black Be? Carbon Capture in SCIENCE this week

The capture of carbon dioxide at the point of emission from coal- or gas-burning power plants is an attractive route to reducing carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. To commercialize carbon capture, as well as transport of liquified carbon dioxide and its storage in exploited oil fields or saline formations, many technological, commercial, and political hurdles remain to be overcome. Urgent action is required if carbon capture and storage is to play a large role in limiting climate change

The Organisation of Cleaner Innovation: Integrating environmental concerns into process technology investment projects

The environmental innovation literature is dominated by accounts assuming that ever-improving environmental performance is the result of the mechanistic implementation of management strategy. This study, written by Dr Nils Markusson, instead investigates the politics and contingent organisational dynamics of investment projects, with the aim to shed new light on how environmental concerns are integrated into them.)

At the British Festival of Science on 8 September, Professor Stuart Haszeldine and Dr Mike Stephenson from BGS presented the latest research findings on CO2 storage. A very large resource exists in saline formations (aquifers), which could store more than 40 Billion tonnes of CO2 in sedimentary rocks more than 1km deep beneath UK terratorial waters. This can offer a storage asset to NW European power plants for 100 years of emissions. If charged commercially, that could create GBP£5 Billion per year revenue.

PhD Opportunity - Carbon Storage in Underground Formations: CO2 Storage in Depleted Gas Fields

Applications are invited to investigate an important aspect of Carbon Capture and Storage, CCS. You will carry out research with a particular focus on storing CO2 in depleted gas reservoirs and deep saline aquifers, seeking to understand the generic issues of the movement and trapping of CO2 in porous rock. The project will focus on understanding and mathematical modelling of CO2 trapping mechanisms during CO2 injection and storage in underground geological formations.
